Researchers at India's Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj Medical University conducted an interesting study with Ashwagandha. They discovered that it can increase testosterone production by as much as 40%! The study was conducted on 75 men who were having trouble with impregnation. They were given 5 grams of Ashwagandha root for 3 months.
About 15% of couples are reporting fertility problems, and in half of them, the problem is related mainly due to low sperm count in men. This is especially evident in countries where the public health services are not suited for dealing with fertility issues (such as India), hence the decision to look for alternative therapies.
Ashwagandha is very popular in traditional Indian medicine (Ayurvedic medicine). It is used, among other things, as a tonic for the elderly and as a libido booster. In tests conducted on rats, it was found to accelerate testicular development and increase sperm production. Some studies have also indicated that Ashwagandha has anabolic effects.
Ashwagandha and Testosterone study results
- in infertile men with normal sperm counts, Ashwagandha increased testosterone production by 15%,
- in men with low sperm counts, the testosterone level increased by 40%!
The topic of Ashwagandha may also be of interest in the context of athletes using steroids, as well as natural athletes whose hormone production may have fallen through extreme dieting. Researchers have also found that people who supplement with Ashwagandha have higher antioxidants levels that neutralize free radicals. They speculate that this mechanism too may have a positive effect on fertility and testosterone levels in men.
Ashwagandha supplementation is very promising when it comes to supporting fertility treatment and maintaining peak testosterone levels in men.
